Inspired by ReCraft 90, a demonstration house built by Steve Loken in Missoula Montana, ReCraft East was designed to demonstrate that a traditional-looking house can be built using more resource-efficient materials. The house was framed with engineered lumber and has flooring and shingles from a sustainably-managed forest in Maine, cabinets from cypress that was originally used for beer vats at the Narragansett breweries; bathroom tile made from recycled auto windshield glass, carpet made from recycled soda bottles and cellulose insulation that is made from recycled newspaper. Many of these materials are now commonly used. The house was tested using a blower-door test to determine its airtight-ness and seal any leaks and has an exhaust fan on a 24 hour timer to provide a prescribed amount of air changes per hour to make for a healthy environment for the occupants.
